What does lamination do? And will it protect my pictures?

Lewford asked:

Ok I am a news paper collecter when my favorite sports team gets on the front page on the sports section. I got some of my papers laminated. I was wondering if the lamination will stop my papers from geting yellow, right now I got my lamination in a box and out of the sun. I want to protect my papers as much as I can. Does lamination work?

Lamination is a process for layering plastic over a paper, picture, etc. There are several qualities, rated by lamination thickness.

This process protects pictures and documents from wear damage. It will NOT prevent fading from extended exposure to sunlight or UV.
